Oil in one day: from the blank canvas

About this event

We start with the material rather than with theory: how the paint behaves on the palette knife, why a thin layer lets the light through and a thick one holds it. In the first hour everyone mixes their own set of colours — after that the canvas stops being frightening.

Then the work itself. I do not hand out a picture to copy: everyone takes their own motif and I come to each easel in turn. By the end of the day the work is finished — not a study, but a canvas that can be hung.
